Your tonsils are found on either side of the back of your throat. Your tonsils are lymph glands, and they help the body fight infections.
Tonsil stones are small lumps of hardened bacteria or debris that form in the crevices of your tonsils. Not everyone will have tonsil stones, but they are common. Tonsil stones are formed because material gets trapped in the tonsils. The material hardens or calcifies into a tonsil stone. These stones usually don't cause serious health problems but can be a nuisance when you find them lingering in your mouth. Unfortunately, tonsil stones can cause you to have bad breath.
Oral Health and Tonsil Stones
The tonsils are designed to catch bacteria and viruses in the throat and mouth. The tonsils can be irregularly shaped and have small pits and crevices. When debris builds up or gets trapped in the pockets of the tonsils, a stone can form over time. Bacteria and fungi feed on the buildup causing a distinct odor.
One potential cause of tonsil stones is poor dental hygiene. It is important to brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily as well. Keep your mouth clean to reduce the bacteria and fungi in your mouth. Tonsil stones could also be a result of large tonsils or inflamed tonsils. Chronic sinus issues have also been a reason behind tonsil stones.
