The Risks Of Poor Dental Hygiene Practices

Posted on 10/15/2023 by Weo Admin
Blue tooth brush with paste, floss, and mouth wash in Seattle, WAMany individuals don't know that oral health can impact their overall well-being. Poor oral hygiene can cause more significant overall health hazards. Good oral hygiene practices can enhance your overall health protection. Poor dental hygiene can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and sensitivity. It can also cause tooth discoloration, bad breath, and stains. Here are the risks of poor dental hygiene practices:

Diabetes

Periodontal disease causes mouth inflammation. The inflammation can impair the body's capacity to effectively use insulin and metabolize sugars in the bloodstream for energy conversion. Due to reduced insulin utilization, blood pressure tends to rise. Studies indicate that individuals with gum disease struggle to manage their blood sugar levels. Consistent periodontal care can help to control diabetes.

[[[H2:Cardiovascular Disease]]

Plaque enters from the mouth into the arteries, heart, and blood vessels. It commonly accumulates within the blood vessels. This results in the blockage of arteries and the formation of blood clots.

Pregnancy Complications

Pregnancy can occasionally lead to periodontal disease due to hormonal changes in the body's biochemistry. The condition lets the bacteria and plaque enter the bloodstream, impacting the fetus. Gum disease has been associated with adverse outcomes such as premature births, low birth weights, and newborn infections.

Endocarditis

Bacteria enter the bloodstream through the mouth and attach to heart regions. This bacterial presence leads to an infection of the heart's inner lining, including valves and chambers. If not treated, the infection can escalate to a life-threatening condition.

Cancer

Studies show a robust association between individuals afflicted with gum disease and cancer incidence. The most pronounced connections have been observed in oropharyngeal and pancreatic cancer cases. However, the precise causative factors underlying this relationship have yet been proved scientifically.

Pneumonia

Some bacteria in the oral cavity can be aspirated into your lungs. This may result in pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses.
