How Can You Restore Your Tooth's Enamel?

Smiling woman looking into mirror at Pacific Modern Dentistry in Seattle, WAOur teeth are amazing! They help us chew food, speak clearly, and give our face its shape.

But even though they're strong, the outer layer of our teeth, called enamel, can wear down over time. This can happen due to several factors, including:

•  Eating and drinking acidic foods and drinks: Think soda, citrus fruits, and even coffee.

•  Brushing your teeth too hard: Gentle is the way to go!

•  Grinding your teeth: This can happen during sleep or when you're stressed.

•  Dry mouth: This can be caused by medications, medical conditions, or even just breathing through your mouth.

When enamel wears down, it can lead to several problems, like:

•  Sensitivity: Your teeth may become sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks.
•  Discoloration: Your teeth may start to look yellow or even brown.
•  Cavities: Once enamel is gone, the softer layer underneath, called dentin, is exposed, making it easier for cavities to form.
•  Cracks and chips: Without the strong enamel layer protecting them, your teeth are more likely to crack or chip.

So, what can you do? The good news is that there are things you can do to prevent further enamel loss and even help restore some of what you've lost.

Prevention is Key

The first step is to prevent further damage. Here are some tips:

•  Brush and floss regularly: This removes plaque and bacteria, which can contribute to enamel erosion.
•  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: This will help protect your enamel from being worn away.
•  Limit acidic foods and drinks: If you do drink or eat them, try to do so with a meal and rinse your mouth with water afterward.
•  Drink plenty of water: This will help keep your mouth moist and prevent dry mouth.
•  Don't grind your teeth: If you grind your teeth at night, talk to your dentist about getting a mouthguard.
•  See your dentist regularly: They can check for signs of enamel erosion and recommend treatments if needed.

Restoring Your Enamel

There are also some things you can do to actually restore lost enamel. These include:

•  Fluoride treatments: Fluoride can help strengthen enamel and make it more resistant to decay. Your dentist can apply fluoride treatments in the office, or you can use fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash at home.
•  Remineralizing toothpaste: These toothpastes contain ingredients that can help rebuild lost enamel.
•  Dental bonding: This is a procedure where a tooth-colored resin is applied to the tooth to repair chips, cracks, and other damage.
•  Crowns: In severe cases, a crown may be needed to protect the tooth. Crowns are like a cap that fits over the entire tooth.

The Bottom Line

Taking care of your teeth is important for your overall health. By following these tips, you can help prevent enamel loss and keep your smile healthy and bright for years to come.

Remember, the best way to keep your teeth healthy is to see your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. They can help you catch problems early and recommend the best course of treatment for you.
