Teeth Require Vitamin D Along with Calcium

Posted on 4/25/2019 by Dr. Jae Seon Kim
Teeth Require Vitamin D Along with CalciumFrom an early age we are taught the importance of getting enough calcium for strong teeth and bones. We learn that we should drink milk and eat dairy products and high-calcium green vegetables, and if your diet doesn't allow for this, you may need to take a calcium supplement.

However, one nutrient that is just as important as calcium is vitamin D, although it doesn't get as much of the fanfare.

What Does Vitamin D Do for Your Teeth?

Vitamin D is a highly important vitamin for oral health, as it allows your body to absorb calcium. Vitamin D is found in eggs, salmon, and fortified foods like orange juice and milk. It works along with calcium to strengthen the teeth, minimizing the risk of tooth decay. Without vitamin D, calcium would not be absorbed into the blood, and it would pass through your system without any real benefit.

Why is Calcium So Important?

Since vitamin D allows calcium to be absorbed into the body, you would not enjoy any of the benefits of calcium without vitamin D. Nearly 99% of the calcium in your body is stored in the teeth and bones, and it provides necessary structural support. If you fail to get enough calcium in your diet, you may see problems with your mouth, including tooth decay, enamel loss, and even gum disease.

Are Any Other Nutrients Important for the Mouth?

Besides calcium and vitamin D, there are other important nutrients that are needed to sustain a healthy mouth. Iron deficiencies can lead to gum inflammation and mouth sores, while low vitamin B2 levels can cause issues with the soft tissues. Likewise, vitamin C helps to protect the gums and boosts iron absorption.

If you are concerned with the health of your mouth, regular evaluations in our office are essential. Call us today to set up your next appointment.
