Ways of Covering an Exposed Tooth Root

Posted on 6/22/2020 by Dr. Jae Seon Kim
Ways of Covering an Exposed Tooth RootExposed tooth roots can be caused by many different circumstances. Depending on what the cause of the problem is, there are different ways to handle an exposed root. So, first, we must identify the problem to see how to continue forward with the best treatment of the exposed tooth root.

What Can We Do for You?

A common problem that causes the tooth root to become exposed is the moving of the gum line. This is the simplest issue to resolve, and the procedure done in this instance is called the pinhole technique. During this medical procedure, we will gently and precisely move already existing gum over the exposed root to where it once existed. Using this procedure, we can avoid cutting or stitching anywhere inside the mouth.

If you are struggling with sensitive teeth due to an exposed root, we are sometimes able to treat it by applying a desensitizing agent or fluoride treatment to the exposed area. By utilizing this method, we are able to cure your sensitive tooth without using invasive means. However, we will also need to consult with you about why the tooth root has become exposed.

Finally, a less common, but more serious, cause for an exposed root is a receding gum line. A receding gum line can be an indication of more serious dental problems like gingivitis and excessive gum wear and needs to be addressed immediately by our doctors. If the cause of your exposed root is due to a receding gum line, we will first attempt to stop it by advising proper care and offering preventative measures. If the gum continues to recede, we will use a procedure known as gum grafting. For this procedure, we will remove a small piece of tissue from the roof of the mouth and attach it to the gum over the exposed root. We attach the tissue by using a small amount of resin over the tooth and stitching.

It is always important to take notice of any discomfort or sensitivity within your mouth and act quickly. If you are having trouble with an exposed root and are dealing with sensitive teeth, please give us a call at our office and we will be happy to assist you create a healthier mouth.
