How Untreated TMJ Can Result in Ringing in Your Ears
Posted on 10/5/2020 by Dr. Jae Seon Kim
If you suffer from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), you might experience a range of symptoms that can be painful and impact your daily life. One of these symptoms that are most common with long-term TMD is tinnitus, which is ringing of the ears. Some people even experiencing other sounds such as hissing, clicking, buzzing or roaring, all of which are related with tinnitus as well.
Why Does Tinnitus Happen with TMD?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located directly next to your eardrum, which is why TMD can affect your hearing and cause pain in your ears. If your TMJ becomes inflamed, it will often impact your hearing as well. The inflammation normally causes your eardrum to be less stable than before, which can begin to cause noises and pain.
How do I Remedy My TMD?
TMD is a difficult diagnosis since very little is known about it. While our staff understands what problems can lead up to it, the reason TMD starts in some and not others is unknown. However, our team will work with you to figure out when you first started experiencing these symptoms. Normally, most people who have faced a large blow or impact to their face, jaw, or neck experience it. This will help pinpoint the cause, but it will only help so much with the actual treatment.
First, we will try non-surgical options such as physical therapy, medication, muscle relaxers, and putting you on a soft-food diet. We plan to help heal the area that started the flareup of your TMD. Other options can include mouth or sports guards, if we feel it is due to grinding or clenching your teeth during sleep or from stress. If these do not work, we will have to opt for a surgical procedure to help prevent the flareup. If you are having excessive ringing in your ears and pain around your jaw or face, contact our staff today to see if you have TMD.
