Three Common Reasons We Might Perform a Dental Extraction
Posted on 2/22/2021 by Dr. Jae Seon Kim
There are many ways which dental damage can occur. Dental damage is universal and is not limited to hygiene. While a lot of dental damage tends to occur gradually and over time, some trauma to the teeth can damage the teeth and require prompt intervention to ensure it does not cause more problems. In many cases, the result is the same: an extraction must be performed. Here are three common reasons why we might perform a dental extraction.
There is Some Infection or Decay Requiring Attention
Tooth decay is the single most common reason for tooth extractions performed. When teeth become infected or are gradually decayed for years, it can cause the whole tooth to start losing its integrity, and cause even the roots to become damaged. Once the enamel has been worn away, if the root is damaged, the whole tooth has to go in order to save the root. Gum disease can cause teeth to become infected, but gums receding and being damaged alone can warrant the need for extraction if we see that it is necessary to save and treat the surrounding teeth or tissue.
Orthodontics
Overcrowded teeth have little solution. If there is not enough room in the mouth for all the teeth present, it can cause poor alignment or obstruct other teeth altogether from performing properly. If teeth cannot be properly cleaned, this can also pose a risk for infection and decay down the road. Most easily, teeth are removed, and space is free for your teeth to align properly
Trauma and Breakage
Breakage can pose risk for an exposed root or damaged base. If the tooth cannot be repaired through a crown, we may opt to remove the tooth from becoming a further nuisance.
