Danger of Ingesting Too Many Sports Drinks

Posted on 6/21/2021 by Dr. Jae Seon Kim
Danger of Ingesting Too Many Sports DrinksExcessive consumption of sports drinks can be harmful to your oral health. These drinks are high in sugars and acids, which damage your teeth. Considering excessive consumption of sports drinks is detrimental to your teeth, avoid consuming them in large quantities, or take the necessary precautions after consuming them.

The Damage They Cause

Sports drinks contain high acid levels, which have a crucial role in damaging the enamel on your teeth. The enamel plays a key role in protecting your teeth, and if it is damaged, your teeth become prone to bacteria. Many oral problems can arise if bacteria dig deeper into your teeth. Besides, with a damaged enamel, tooth sensitivity can occur. You will likely feel discomfort and pain when eating certain foods. The roots of your teeth can also become inflamed, with chances of bleeding gums being significantly high.

Continued energy drink consumption erodes your enamel, putting your teeth at the risk of cavities and decay. It is also important to note that the enamel cannot be regrown once damaged, making decaying effects extremely severe.

Limit Sports Drinks Consumption

Sports drinks pose a serious risk for your oral health due to their high levels of acid. It is important to always drink plenty of water to help dilute the acid. We also advise that you do not brush your teeth straight after consuming such drinks— it can spread the acids around your mouth. No matter the levels of intake, ingesting sports drinks will have an impact on your teeth. The best option is to refrain from such drinks altogether.

If you happen to ingest sports drinks, we advise that you rinse your mouth with water. You should also wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. The acid in these drinks weakens your enamel; therefore, brushing right after can rapidly wear off the enamel.
