Brushing your teeth is one of the most important things you could do for your oral health. It is also important to floss daily, eat a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, and get your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year. Most people have a good idea of how to brush their teeth, and we want to expand upon that knowledge.
Brushing Your Teeth the Right Way
We suggest patients brush their teeth for at least two minutes per session. That can seem like a long time for young children, so we recommend using a timer to help them understand the importance of brushing their teeth for two minutes. During that brushing session, it is important to establish a routine. Do you start brushing on top or the bottom teeth? It really does not matter, as long as you are consistent and give each tooth surface some attention.
Did you know that it is also important to brush the roof of your mouth? It is important to brush all the surfaces in your mouth. Your brushing routine should include brushing the roof of your mouth, your tongue, as well as the inside of your cheeks. Bacteria can live everywhere in your mouth, and brushing each part of your mouth, including the roof of your mouth, minimizes the bacterial load.
We suggest using a soft-bristled toothbrush and changing it at the start of each new season. Ideally, you should replace your toothbrush 3-4 times a year. You do not have to brush hard against your teeth; a gentle brushing will be favorable for your gums.
