Does My Diet Really Matter?

Posted on 9/5/2022 by Dr. Jae Seon Kim
Does My Diet Really Matter?Seems like a strange question to ask, doesn't it? In case you are wondering, no we are not talking about a diet to lose weight. We are talking about whether or not what you eat can affect your teeth. Why is it so surprising that what we eat impacts our oral cavity? Think about it. Everything we eat impacts our body in one way or another, does it not? The same goes for our teeth.

Although tooth enamel is incredibly strong, it can also become porous over time. This leads our teeth open to potential staining. If we ingest too much of the following, wine, tea, coffee, or other certain foods or drinks, it can become problematic.

Enamel can soak up the stains from any of those listed above. Something else that can lead to staining is smoking. Whether cigarettes, pipes, or cigars, they can all cause problems to our teeth. There is nothing worse than looking at photos and noticing our teeth are not as bright as our friends.

Stains Aren't the Only Things to Worry About

As if stains were not enough to worry about, other foods and beverages can cause other problems for our tooth enamel. Eating foods with a high acid content can eventually break down tooth enamel to the point that a crown might be needed. It is the same for drinking too much soda. Some fruits even have a high citric acid content and can damage tooth enamel. So, even when you're trying to eat fruit to be healthy, you could be causing damage. Great news, right? Therefore, what can we do?

In Conclusion

It is important to keep everything in balance. It's unrealistic to think we'll never drink a soda or eat an orange or have a glass of wine. The point is to keep it in balance and not ingest massive amounts of these things. Also, when we do ingest certain things you should brush your teeth as soon as possible afterward to protect your tooth enamel.
