Seattle dentist, Dr. Kim holding a mouthguard in his hand at Pacific Modern Dentistry. If you play sports, particularly contact sports, you know just how important it is to wear the right type of protective gear. This gear is designed to prevent serious injuries while still allowing you to enjoy playing. Common protective gear includes shin guards, elbow pads, shoulder pads, and helmets. While a helmet is designed to protect your head from injuries, it does not protect your mouth. Protecting your teeth and the other components of your mouth is essential. Pacific Modern Dentistry can help with a custom mouthguard.

What is a Mouthguard?

Your mouth has many important responsibilities. Your mouth allows you to eat, speak, and even smile confidently. Protecting your mouth, and all of its components, while playing sports is necessary to prevent serious injuries and issues. These injuries can affect the functions of your mouth, your oral health, and even your overall health as well.

A mouthguard an oral device specifically designed to help protect your teeth and your mouth from injuries and other issues while you play sports. It is worn over your top teeth and works to absorb the impact your face might suffer while you play. It works to not only protect your teeth but your intraoral tissues and your jawbone as well.

Types of Mouthguards

There are a few different types of mouthguards available.
•  Stock. A stock mouthguard is the most affordable type of mouthguard available, and you can find it at just about any sporting goods store. While affordable, these mouthguards are pre-molded, meaning that the one you buy may not fit your mouth properly. When your mouthguard does not fit correctly, it can increase your risk for injury as well as interfere with breathing.
•  Boil and bite. A boil and bite mouthguard is also widely available at most sporting goods stores. This type of mouthguard provides a semi-custom fit. It is made to be boiled in water and then bitten into to mold to your mouth.
•  Custom. We provide custom fit mouthguards. Our custom mouthguards are created from impressions taken of your mouth, which allow us to provide you with the most accurate, most comfortable fit. Our mouthguards are also made from the highest quality materials. While a more expensive option, you can rest assured knowing that you have the best possible protection.

Mouthguard Care

For your mouth guard to properly protect your mouth, it is essential that you take good care of it. It should be rinsed in water before and after each use. You should also periodically clean it with soap and water. When not in use, store your mouthguard in a hard case with vent holes. These vent holes allow for airflow to prevent bacterial buildup. Keep your mouthguard in a safe location. Do not store it a car or anywhere else where it may be exposed to heat or direct sunlight. This can cause the mouthguard to warp, which will greatly reduce its effectiveness. You should also periodically check your mouthguard for damage. At the first sign of wear and tear, it should be replaced right away.

The Benefits of a Custom Mouthguard

A custom mouthguard provides several benefits.
•  Your teeth are protected from damage.
•  Your jaw is protected against injuries and bone fractures.
•  Your intraoral tissues are protected from lacerations.
•  A mouthguard can help to protect against a concussion.
•  You save money. By preventing serious oral injuries while playing sports, you avoid having to undergo invasive, and expensive dental treatments.

With a custom fit mouthguard, we can help you to protect your teeth, your jawbone, and your intraoral tissues preventing serious injuries. To schedule your consultation for a custom mouthguard, call Pacific Modern Dentistry today at (206)284-4505.
