Root Canal Therapy
Seattle, WA

A woman receiving root canal therapy at Pacific Modern Dentistry in Seattle, WAAt Pacific Modern Dentistry, we enable our patients to overcome every dental problem that life can throw at them. Though a root canal can sound scary if you have not had one before, we want to reassure you about how it is a treatment that can leave you with better dental health than you had before. We never want to cause you unnecessary pain. Instead, let us explain how a root canal can save the teeth that need it most.

When Would You Need A Root Canal?

•  You suffer routine tooth pain.
•  Your gums feel swollen or tender near the problem area.
•  You have prolonged sensitivity to hot liquids or food.
•  One of more of your teeth experience significant discoloration.

What Exactly Is Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal is a four-step process that is usually performed over two visits to our office. First, we will give you local anesthesia to numb the problem tooth. Then we will use a small drill to open up the top of the tooth so we can clear it of bacteria with files and water. After the interior of the tooth is cleaned, we will fill it and close the opening. This prepares you for your next visit, where we will place a permanent crown on top of the tooth.

Is The Root Canal Procedure Painful?

At Pacific Modern Dentistry, our patients often ask about whether root canal therapy is painful. The simple answer is that most patients experience minimal to no pain as the process is performed. We make absolutely sure that the tooth and nearby areas are numbed to prevent you from feeling much pain. You may experience heightened sensitivity after the treatment is completed, but aspirin or ibuprofen will counteract this until your body has healed naturally. The thought of having a root canal is more uncomfortable than the treatment itself, so we urge you to approach the therapy with an open mind.

Are There Alternatives To Root Canal Therapy?

While we recommend a root canal when you have an infected or damaged tooth, we are also prepared to help you with alternative treatments if that is what you prefer. It is often possible to extract the problem tooth and replace it with a denture, dental implant, or bridge. Ozone gas or calcium hydroxide can be used to irrigate the root cavity to disinfect the tooth, though it is possible for the infection to return later. Lastly, you can remove processed sugars from your diet, eat high-quality proteins, and avoid grain products. This will not repair a cracked tooth, but a healthier lifestyle can heal some dental infections over time.

Root canal therapy can repair and save any of your badly damaged or infected teeth. The process is nothing to be afraid of, and we at Pacific Modern Dentistry will do everything possible to make the treatment fast and painless. Your dental health is most important to us, and our dentists are trained to ensure it.
