Seattle dentist, giving a patient dental bonding at Pacific Modern Dentistry.Your smile is the very first thing that many people notice about you. Moreover, when you smile, your teeth are placed front and center. Any flaws in your teeth, even only minor ones, can have a significant impact on the quality of your smile, as well as your confidence. These minor flaws can also have a serious effect on how others see you. At Pacific Modern Dentistry, we can correct the appearance of your teeth, eliminating minor flaws and enhancing the beauty of your smile, with dental bonding.

Is Your Smile Affected by Minor Flaws?

There are a few different types of minor flaws that can have a significant impact on the quality of your smile. These flaws include:
•  Small chips and cracks in your tooth enamel.
•  Small gaps between your teeth.
•  Teeth that are too small.
•  Oddly shaped teeth.
•  Discoloration that has not responded to teeth whitening.

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a dental procedure that is performed to restore a natural appearance to teeth affected by minor flaws. In doing so, this treatment can help to greatly enhance the overall appearance of your smile. Dental bonding involves the use of a material called composite resin. Composite resin is made up of a mixture of fine glass, plastic, and other materials. It is a tooth-colored substance, which enables it to blend in effectively with your surrounding tooth structure. It is also very versatile. The material can be shaped and molded to meet many different needs, allowing us to transform your smile and leave you feeling much more confident.

What to Expect During the Dental Bonding Process

Dental bonding is a quick, simple, painless procedure that does not require any form of anesthesia. We begin by cleaning your teeth. Next, an acid etch is applied to the treatment area to create a rough surface. In some cases, air abrasion may be used to achieve this same goal. The texture is necessary to enhance the bond between the composite resin and your tooth enamel. The teeth are then washed a second time and dried thoroughly. We apply the composite resin to the treatment areas and shape it until the desired result is achieved. Finally, a specialized light is used to cure, or dry, the composite resin and it is polished to a smooth finish.

Caring for Your Dental Bonding

While dental bonding is very effective, it does require some special care. You should avoid biting or chewing on hard objects, such as popcorn kernels, hard candies, or your fingernails. Doing so can cause the material to chip. You should also take care of anything that can stain, such as certain types of foods, beverages, and tobacco products. Composite resin can stain, just like your natural teeth. Unlike your natural teeth, however, composite resin cannot be whitened. Once stained, it will need to be replaced if you want to whiten your teeth. Other than these few considerations, you can care for your bonding just like your natural teeth and should continue to brush and floss daily.

What are the Benefits of Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding provides several benefits. These include:
•  Quick. The process can often be completed in 30 minutes.
•  Painless. You do not need a local anesthetic.
•  Noninvasive. We do not need to alter your tooth structure in any way.
•  Affordable. Bonding is one of the most affordable cosmetic treatments available.
•  Enhancing the beauty of your smile and boost your confidence.
