Does a Dentist Perform Deep Cleaning?

Posted on 8/8/2022 by Dr. Jae Seon Kim
Does a Dentist Perform Deep Cleaning?Dentists carry out various procedures on their patients. Among the common services offered by most dentists is dental cleaning. There are two types of dental cleaning. We have the regular cleaning, where all people are advised to have general dental cleaning twice a year. On the other hand, we have what is known as deep cleaning.

What Does Deep Cleaning Entail

Also known as scaling or planing, deep cleaning goes beyond the regular removal of dirt from within teeth. The dentist cleanses beneath the gum in this approach to get rid of plaque and other types of dirt that may lead to gum disease. This means that failure to undergo deep cleaning may invite gum disease.

Does Deep Cleaning Hurt?

Deep cleaning involves the aggressive removal of dirt from beneath the gum. Since your dentist will be removing dirt from beneath the gum, there is a chance that you may feel some discomfort. Thankfully, dentists administer local anesthesia to the area to be operated upon to numb it. Thanks to the numbing effect, you will not feel any pain during the process. However, you should expect to feel some soreness after the procedure.

Why is Deep Cleaning Necessary

There are two main reasons why you may want to undertake deep cleaning. One of the reasons is that it might be a medical necessity. If you have been diagnosed with gum disease or found to be infected by bacteria, you might have to undergo deep cleaning. In this case, the procedure is done as a recommendation by your dentist. The other situation where you may undergo deep cleaning is when you want to prevent the occurrence of infections.

Deep cleaning is a voluntary dental service. Although you will not be asked by your dentist to use such a service, it is advisable to clean once every year.
