Lately there have been people who have started to make their own toothpaste. Often it is because of the cost, they can make it for less than they pay for a name brand in the store. Other people make their own toothpaste because they want to control the ingredients that they put into their mouths. Is making your own toothpaste really a good idea? Consider the downsides before you start to look for a recipe. Ingredients Many of the homemade toothpaste recipes that are easy to find have ingredients that are not going to benefit your teeth. Sometimes an ingredient might even harm your teeth. Honey, for example, is in many recipes for homemade toothpaste. You do not want to keep honey on your teeth because of the sugar content! Other recipes call for things such as charcoal, which can be harmful if you swallow it by accident. Some recipes call for vinegar, which will hurt the enamel on your teeth. Another problem with homemade toothpaste is what it is missing. Chances are that you are not going to create a fluoridated toothpaste in your kitchen! Fluoride is essential to keeping your teeth strong and fighting off cavities. If you make your own toothpaste, you will take away that protection. Toothpaste is not something that you should experiment with. If you brush your teeth with something that is harmful, you could damage your teeth permanently.
